Baduanjin 八段锦

What it is
The Eight Brocades — eight silk-smooth movements strung together, in use for roughly a millennium as the everyday set of Chinese qigong[1]. Each has a name that doubles as its instruction: Two Hands Hold Up the Heavens; Draw the Bow to Shoot the Hawk; Separate Heaven and Earth; Wise Owl Gazes Backwards; Sway the Head and Shake the Tail; Two Hands Hold the Feet; Clench Fists with Glaring Eyes; Bounce on the Toes. The whole set takes ten to fifteen minutes, needs no equipment, and can be scaled from athletic to armchair.
What the evidence says
For a folk exercise, baduanjin has collected a respectable file: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 randomized trials (1,535 participants) found significant improvements in quality of life, sleep quality, balance, grip strength, trunk flexibility, blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic), and resting heart rate[2]. The trials share the field's usual limitations — small sizes, varied methods — but the direction is consistent, and reported adverse events across the literature are rare. As prescriptions go, eight slow movements is an easy one to fill.
How to begin
This is the set to learn first. The names carry the choreography, the order never changes, and one week of morning repetition makes it yours for life. Mornings suit it — the tradition liked dawn, facing east, which costs nothing to honor — and consistency beats intensity by a wide margin. When a movement asks more balance than today offers, the armchair version counts: the body clock says you showed up, and that was the medicine.
